THE SCRIPTURE STUDY TRANSLATION

Read thoughtfully.
Study closely.

Read the Greek Scriptures in clear modern English, compare the Greek, and explore the reasons behind each verse’s wording.

Reading, listening, and exploring

Select a verse to see an explanation of its translation. Use “Show Greek text” to display the Greek beneath the English, or the checkbox beside a verse to show just that verse’s Greek.

To listen, select a verse and choose “Play from verse,” or press Play in the audio player. The reading continues through the chapter and highlights each verse as it is spoken. You can pause, change the speed, or turn off “Follow text” if you prefer to scroll for yourself. The narration uses a generated voice named Jon.

Understanding the translation

The Scripture Study Translation (SST) is an AI-assisted translation based on direct examination of the Greek text in the context of the surrounding Scriptures. It aims to express the Greek accurately in natural modern English.

The verse notes explain what the Greek says, why a particular English expression was chosen, and how the context supports that choice. When more than one meaning is possible, the notes describe the uncertainty. Translation decisions and interpretations remain open to examination and revision.

Which chapters can I read?

John 1 is currently available, with an explanation for every verse and audio narration. More chapters will become available as their translations and notes are completed. Greyed-out chapters are not yet available to read.

Which Greek text is used?

The translation follows the SBL Greek New Testament, version 1.2, edited by Michael W. Holmes and abbreviated SBLGNT. This is a modern published edition of the ancient Greek text. Greek editions can differ where manuscripts preserve different wording; the notes identify the edition’s wording when it affects the English translation.

The Greek displayed beneath each verse preserves the edition’s spelling and punctuation. Symbols that point to editorial notes are omitted to make reading easier. Where the English divides a sentence differently, as in John 1:3–4, the verse note explains the choice.
